CSA Z809-02
The
Canadian Standards Association (CSA) first published the Z809
forest certification standard in 1996 (CSA-Z809-96) and revised
and republished in standard again in 2002 (CSA Z809-02).
The CSA Z809-02 certification standard includes
Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) criteria and elements which
embody the most broadly accepted forest values which have also
been endorsed by the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (CCFM).
The CSA Z809-02 standards' emphasis on public involvement
allows the public to be directly involved in the identification
of local-level forest values (consistent with the CCFM criteria)
and in the identification of objectives, indicators, and targets
to ensure the values for a Defined Forest Area (DFA) are addressed.
Both Tolko Industries Ltd. (High Level Lumber Division) and Footner Forest Products Ltd. (FFP) implemented a public involvement process in June 2003 to meet the CSA Z809-02 forest certification standard and completed our first Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) Plan for our DFA in April 2004.
In November 2004, both companies were successful in achieving certification status to the CSA Z809:02 forest certification standard following a registration audit by independent third-party auditors. During the week of January 8, 2007, both companies were involved in third party lead re-registration audits to the CSA Z809:02 standard. The result of these audits is that both Tolko Industries Ltd. (HLLD), and Footner Forest Products Ltd. were recommended for re-certification.
As of July 18, 2008, Footner Forest Products Ltd., is not certified to the CSA Z809:02 standard due to discontinued Woodlands Operations. Future certification will be dependent on active operations and an established Environmental Management System and Sustainable Forest Management Plan.
The results of the registration audit for Tolko Industries Ltd., as well as the periodic surveillance audits which are completed to ensure ongoing conformance to the CSA Z809:02 standard, can be made available to the public by contacting
or by contacting Jeremy Beal at 780-926-8918.
